Guides on finding, understanding and dealing with wasp nests.
Wasps in a fireplace or at a chimney pot call for a closed room, a clear description and patience until the technician has dealt with the nest.
A sting is most likely when the colony is at its largest, but it can happen at any point from spring, and a calm routine makes it much less alarming.
Gardeners who leave dead wood, long grass and old stumps for wildlife often wonder how to do so without giving a wasp queen a ready-made home.
Wasps and bees are easily confused, but the right call differs: we treat wasp nests, and bee swarms or colonies need a beekeeper.
Where there is a lot of ground, several outbuildings and mature planting, a methodical weekly walk-round is the best way to spot insect activity early and identify it correctly.
